School Meals
At Fairlands, we are committed to providing nutritious, balanced meals that support the health, wellbeing, and learning of every child. Our approach to food is guided by the School Food Standards and aligns with national safeguarding legislation to ensure all pupils are safe, supported, and included.
What We Offer
-
Hot School Lunches: Prepared fresh daily, our meals include:
- At least one portion of fruit and vegetables
- A starchy food such as pasta, rice, or bread
- A protein source (meat, fish, eggs, beans)
- A dairy item (milk, cheese, yoghurt)
- Water is freely available at all meal times
-
Packed Lunches: Pupils may bring a packed lunch from home. We encourage healthy choices and ask that no nuts or fizzy drinks are included.
-
Snacks: Free fruit, bagels and milk are provided to all pupils.
Menu and Nutrition
Our menus are planned in line with the School Food Regulations 2014 and reviewed regularly. We aim to:
- Use fresh, locally sourced ingredients
- Offer a variety of meals across the week
- Limit foods high in fat, sugar, and salt
- Promote wholegrain and fibre-rich options
Parents and carers need to look at the menu in advance with their child, so that they are ready to choose their option during registration each morning.
Safeguarding and Inclusion
We take safeguarding seriously and ensure that all food provision complies with the Keeping Children Safe in Education (DfE, 2025) guidance. Our procedures include:
-
Allergen Management: We follow strict protocols for food allergies and intolerances. Parents must inform the school of any dietary needs. All staff are aware of the risks of allergens.
-
Supervised Mealtimes: Lunchtimes are supervised by trained staff who promote positive social interaction and monitor pupil wellbeing.
-
Hygiene and Safety: Pupils are encouraged to wash hands before eating. All food preparation follows national hygiene standards.
-
Cultural and Medical Needs: We make reasonable adjustments for pupils with medical, religious, or cultural dietary requirements.
-
No Food Sharing Policy: To protect children with allergies and dietary restrictions, pupils are not permitted to share food or bring in treats for the class.
Free School Meals
Your child may be eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) if you receive certain benefits. All children in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 are entitled to Universal Infant Free School Meals.
We apply for free schools for all children on behalf of all parents and carers, and we will contact you if your child is eligible.
