Summertime Happiness!

Wednesday, 17 April 2024

This month, we will be talking about the value of Happiness!

We will be asking the children what makes them happy, and to think of ways to share happiness with others.

What's on your list of things which makes you happy? :0)

Read our blogs!

STEM Discovery Centre

We had great fun on our STEM Discovery Centre trip. We took part in lots in exciting activities including making our own rockets and launching them outside, watching some cool magic tricks that were actually science and learning about the Mars rover.

Phenomenal Physical Education!

This half term, we are lucky enough to have Stevenage Borough FC coming in to run some of our PE sessions. During today's session, we warmed up by playing a modified version of stuck in the mud. Then, we practised our passing and shooting skills before playing some mini games of handball. We are loving the sessions so far and we cannot wait for next week!

ADHD and Autism support

The Toolbox from Mindler is a dedicated webpage specifically focussing on ADHD and Autism support for children and young people. The Toolbox offers inspirational content, workshops, self-help tools, interactive livestreams, anonymous text chat service (to ask any questions they may have about Neurodiversity) and lots of other resources and information. It also serves as a guide, signposting users to alternative services and accessible interventions within Hertfordshire.

Our Character Descriptions of James and the Giant Peach

We made character descriptions of the characters from James and the Giant Peach. The characters included James, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. We made sure we used expanded noun phrases to describe the characters and conjunctions to extend our sentences. We then took our time writing up our descriptions in our best handwriting. We have made a beautiful display in the upper school entrance if you would like to see it!

Stevenage FC

Today we had our second session with Stevenage FC. We have started to look at our 'A, B, Cs'. Today we began looking at 'B' which stands for balance. We started by recapping parts of our body and then balancing on different parts of our body. For example we might have had to balance on two hands and one foot. We then worked in pairs to get across the stepping stones, making sure we stood still balancing when there was the call 'danger'.

Dinosaur Eggs!

This week some dinosaur eggs arrived! Beech class had a fantastic idea to make nests for them to keep them safe. The class made some brilliant plans and then used their plans to build their own nests.

The class worked hard and shared the resources they found. Lots of children helped in independent time to find the natural resources they needed, like grass, sticks and leaves. We even remebered flowers to make their nests smell nice!

The children were very excited and worked well as a team to build theirs nests. Then Miss Weston gave them a dinosaur egg to very carefully carry to their nests.
This week we are going to also look at the life cycle of a dinosaur.

I wonder what will happen to their dinosaur eggs next?

Belonging

During RE, we discussed what the term 'belonging' means and how it feels to belong. We identified that some people may feel a sense of belonging when they visit their spiritual place. For example, Muslims who visit their Mosque. We then shared where we felt we belonged and all agreed we belong in Elm class!

Macbeth!

Year 5 have been performing Shakespeare today! In small groups the children performed the scene where Macbeth and Banquo meet three witches on the heath. The used intonation and prosody to read and interpret all those very tricky old English words. They did a fantastic job!
