Top Tip 6: Limiting Screen Time

By Miss Hodgson, Miss Brooker and Mr Tweeddell , in Year 6 - Monday, 7 November 2022

Good morning wonderful Year 6 and happy Monday!

We are coming to you this morning with our sixth top tip to support our focus: Every Day Counts! Our suggestion is that you limit your screen time in the evenings and put any screens away one hour before bed. Blue light from objects such as your TV, phone or tablet can suppress melatonin levels (this controls your sleep-wake cycle) and can delay sleepiness. This could, in turn, negatively affect the quality and length of your sleep.

Why not try a non-screen activity before bedtime such as colouring, reading or meditating?

Top Tip 5: Hygiene

By Miss Hodgson, Miss Brooker and Mr Tweeddell , in Year 6 - Monday, 31 October 2022

Good morning wonderful Year 6 and happy Monday!

We are coming to you this morning with our fifth top tip to support our focus: Every Day Counts! Something that can affect our attendance is our health. Of course, if you are very unwell, we would not expect you to come into school. However, one way that we can help avoid catching illnesses is ensuring that we practise good hygiene! Washing our hands and using tissues can help the prevention of catching and spreading bugs that can lead to illness and therefore absence from school.

Are you making sure that you are washing your hands properly?

What a WOW day!

By Willow Class , in Year 6 - Wednesday, 19 October 2022

Yesterday, we thoroughly enjoyed our WOW Day activities! We started our morning by using our Science learning all about light to make our own periscopes during Design and Technology. We learnt that these were used during the war so we decided to camouflage them and try to spy on the other year 6 classes. As stealthy as we were, it is safe to say that we were eventually caught! We finished off our day by watching a fantastic film: Hidden Figures. Throughout Black History Month, we have been learning all about Katherine Johnson. We were so excited to find out that there was a film about her journey working at NASA - we couldn't wait to watch it!

Top Tip 4: Eating Breakfast!

By Miss Hodgson, Miss Brooker and Mr Tweeddell , in Year 6 - Monday, 17 October 2022

Good morning wonderful Year 6 and happy Monday!

We are coming to you this morning with our forth top tip to support our focus: Every Day Counts! Something really simple yet incredibly important that can set you up for the day is eating breakfast! There are multiple benefits to this including boosting energy levels, promoting heart health and stimulating your brain. Studies have shown that children who have a nutritious breakfast each morning have improved attendance as well as better concentration.

Why don't you tell your teacher what you've been having for breakfast this week?

Think like a scientist!

By Willow Class , in Year 6 - Thursday, 13 October 2022

This half term, our Science topic has been all about light. We have learnt all about reflection, refraction and we have completed our own investigation on shadows. Our enquiry was about the relationship between shadows and the distance between the light source and the object. We made our predictions first and then used torches and moved them further and further away from our object. Afterwards, we recorded our results in a table. Once we had all our data, we plotted these results on a graph to see this relationship clearly. If you want to know what we discovered, come and ask us for we are super scientists!

Top Tip 3:

By Miss Hodgson, Miss Brooker and Mr Tweeddell , in Year 6 - Monday, 10 October 2022

Good morning wonderful Year 6 and happy Monday!

We are coming to you this morning with our third top tip to support our focus: Every Day Counts! Something that can be really helpful when it comes to being ready in the morning is preparing all your things the night before. This means that you have your uniform ready and all of your equipment in your bag. This is a little bit like giving yourself a head start on the next day - it automatically makes it easier for the 'tomorrow you' to get going on the right foot and ensure that you are on time.

Why don't you give it a go this week?

Class Assembly Success!

By Willow Class , in Year 6 - Friday, 7 October 2022

Willow Class blew so many people with their assembly yesterday. We decided to really challenge ourselves and reenact our core text: Coming to England - a wonderful biography written by Floella Benjamin. Our topic, island life, has taught us all about the differences and similarities between the Caribbean and the UK. Being from Trinidad, Floella's life story was a perfect book to match. The children put in their best efforts to make their acting and speaking as clear as possible.
Thank you so much to all the adults that came to watch and show their support - the children were beyond excited to have such a full audience!
Well done Willow Class!

Scary story writing!

By Willow Class , in Year 6 - Tuesday, 4 October 2022

This week in English, we are focusing on making good vocabulary choices to write a story setting that has a specific, desired affect on our reader. We want our readers to be truly spooked! In order to be successful, we spent today's lesson building up a bank of high level vocabulary to support our writing tomorrow. We got ourselves into the zone by having all the lights off and listening to spooky sounds - we are so excited for our writing tomorrow!

Top Tip 2: How much sleep?

By Miss Hodgson, Miss Brooker and Mr Tweeddell , in Year 6 - Monday, 3 October 2022

Good morning wonderful Year 6 children and happy Monday! We hope that you are ready for yet another week of fantastic learning!

We are coming to you this morning with our second top tip to support our focus: Every Day Counts! Did you know that children that are 10 or 11 years old need 9-11 hours sleep every night? This is how much sleep you should be getting in order to avoid being tired or lethargic. Children who get enough sleep can have a healthier immune system, better school performance and better mental health.

Are you getting enough sleep each night?

Every Day Counts!

By Miss Hodgson, Miss Brooker and Mr Tweeddell , in Year 6 - Monday, 26 September 2022

Good morning wonderful Year 6!

As we know, we have begun to focus on something really important this term: Every day counts! This is to ensure that both attendance and punctuality are at the best they can be so that you can maximise your learning time. In order to support this, each week, your Year 6 teachers will blog a tip to support either attendance or punctuality.

This week, your top tip is: setting an alarm clock!

Having an alarm clock can not only help wake you up on time in the morning but it also helps keep your sleep schedule regular. This can normalise your sleep pattern and with this regularity, you may even find that you wake up before your alarm!
