Ready, Steady, Cooking Club!

By Robert Staples, Headteacher - Tuesday, 27 April 2010

On Monday 26th April, eight pupils and two parents from Year 1 attended the very first cooking club session. They made a basic scone recipe but were shown how it can easily be adapted to be either sweet or savoury based.

The children worked in twos and made the following flavours: Cheese and herb / Cheese and Sun-dried tomatoes / Cherry / Currant

The main skill which was learnt was "rubbing-in" which is going to prove to be very useful over the next few weeks as they are going to be concentrating on recipes using scones as their base. They will be making pizza scones, meat cobbler and fruit crumbles.

A great skill for safely cutting small ingredients with scissors was also learnt. The ingredients go into a paper cup and then you cut them inside the cup without the scissors having to go near your fingers. Ir was very easy for everyone and great fun - try it at home and see what you think!

Our scones smelt amazing and made us all very hungry whilst we were cleaning up. Everyone got to take a selection home with them to share with their families and the comments were great. All eight children said that they'd enjoyed their first session and were looking forward to doing more cooking both at school and at home.

We're Doing Our Best!

By Robert Staples, Headteacher - Friday, 8 January 2010

Staff clearing the snow With no sign of let up from the icy weather, Fairlands was reluctantly closed again on Friday. Despite the icy weather, some staff were able to come in today, in order to help clear paths and entrance ways of snow and ice. Thank you to them for all their efforts!

We do appreciate that school closure creates a huge disruption to families, so please be reassured that we will never close unless we feel it is absolutely unavoidable. There are many factors to take into account when making the decision to close and it is not something we take lightly.

We are hoping that the school will be back up and running on Monday so that things can get back to normal. Please make sure your child has suitable clothing, including a coat and shoes with proper grip, as the site is still likely to be icy in some areas.

Join The Friends Of Fairlands!

By Robert Staples, Headteacher - Wednesday, 9 September 2009

The school's Parent & Teacher Association, 'The Friends Of Fairlands' (FOFS), will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday 14th September at 6pm in the dining hall. There will be a report on the previous year, the annual election of the chair, vice-chair, secretary and treasurer and discussions about plans for the future.

This is a great opportunity for any parents, teachers, or other interested 'friends' to come along and find out more about getting involved. We would love you to come along!
