The children have had a fantastic day completing their Tudor houses. I'm sure you've all seen them by now and we're sure you'll agree just how brilliant they are!
We had a special visitor today during our WOW day! The firefighters from Red Watch came to see us. They told us about their job and all the special equipment which they use. We talked about how fire engines are different now to in 1666. We then asked them questions about fire safety and afterwards we had a tour of their fire engine! They even put the siren for us. We had the best day ever!
Fun WOW Day!
Samuel Pepys told us all about The Great Fire of London by writing about it in his diary. We began to write our own diarys using a feather pencil. We could write the diary as Samuel Pepys or we could be ourselves but back in 1666!
We have had a fantastic WOW day so far! We have made our own Samuel Pepys diaries and we even made our own quills! We then retold the events from The Great Fire of London. On each page of our diary, we carefully thought about how the fire spread quickly across London. We then chose our favourite sentence and used ink to write up our writing using a quill. We have completed lots of other activties too but this activity is our favourite so far!
This week the children have been experimenting with materials. They were asked to find out which materials would be best for a waterproof coat. They really enjoyed testing them all out!
Elder Class have been busy writing poems. The children choose their favourite poem and then read it to the rest of the class. They read their poems with clarity and expression.
We have enjoyed learning about question poems this week. We picked a theme such as Santa, planes or planets and then put our questions together in a list. We then practised reading our poems aloud to each other. We were inspired by Michael Rosen who performs his poems with lots of exciting actions and expressions.
We discussed poetry and identified a shape poem about balloons, a list poem about cats sleeping and a rhyming poem about cakes. We loved looking at these poems and noticed that some poems had lines grouped together into verses. We understood that commas are used in lists. We can't wait to learn more about poems and write our own poems at the end of the week!
This week the children have learnt all about the really inspiring Olympic athlete Wilma Rudolph. She overcame huge obstacles in her life to become the first American woman to win 3 gold medals in the same Olympic games in 1960. The children were so enthusiastic about their poster making project and the reults were fantastic. Over the weekend perhaps you can ask your child what they remember about her fascinating life story (and yes she really did have 21 brothers and sisters!)
It's been another fantastic response to our current home learning project this week. The children absolutely love sharing these amazing creations with the class. We want to say a huge thank you to all of you for helping at home, and look forward to more projects next week!
