Elder Class have had an amazing World Book Day. We have dressed up as book characters and shared each other's favourite book.
We then talked about our book and what we liked about it. We discussed whether we would recommend it to our friends and what made it a good read.
We had a visit from a secret reader that came to our class. Mrs Johnson read Harris McCoo and the rainbow haggis by Steven Brown. Elder Class liked the story because it was funny, there were rainbows and it included a game where we had to spot an owl.
In Maths this week, Year 2 have been learning about halving and doubling with numbers. We know that you cannot half a odd number. Today we were halving and doubling money. We would pick a value such as 50p and then with a partner, decide whether to double or half it. We then would record this on our whiteboards and show the new value using the coins.
During PE this term, we have been exploring and developing basic gymnastic actions on the floor and by using the aparatus. They have been working on their skills of jumping, rolling, balancing and developing an awareness when creating sequences which included the use of shapes, levels and directions.
The children really enjoyed getting the aparatus out in our PE lessons and putting all the skills they learnt into practice!
This term our topic has changed to, 'Amazing Art'. Over the last two weeks, we have been looking at shading and patterns by making dark and light tones with a pencil. In our Art lesson this week, we applied the skills we have been learning by using drawing techniques to an artist's work. The children are so proud of their drawings as we are too!
We have been reading the story of Dragon Post by Emma Yarlett. We have been thinking about different ways we send communications like writing a post card, sending a text or writing an email. We have also been looking at features of letters and the four types of sentences you might find.
Elder Class have really enjoyed the story and have been really excited to read the different letters hidden within the book.
We have changed our topic this term to 'Amazing Art' because we really wanted to draw. This week, we practiced making dark and light tones with a pencil. We also made different patterns with our pencil. We discussed shading and how it can help make an object look 3D. We have also started bringing in our home learning linked to 'Amazing Art'. We have started to put our work up on the display board and can't wait to fill it up!
We have learnt about how statistics tell us information. We learnt how to record and read tally charts. We discussed information about our favourite fruits. We know that when you tally a number more than 4 then you need to 'close the gate' for number 5. Today we learnt how to use a pictogram and understood that the pictures tell us information. We answered questions and recorded our own facts about how many ice lollies were sold.
The children have been very busy making some lovely Christmas crafts this week. They returned to a skill they learnt during the Great Fire of London work and made a watercolour wash background for their polar bear pictures, and very beautiful they are too!
Today during our No Outsiders lesson, we looked at the story 'How to be a Lion'. Leonard was a gentle lion, not a fierce lion. He also made good friends with a duck. The other lions wanted to change him but Leonard said anyone can be different and that we should celebrate this!
Today we talked about about super abilities. We described ourselves as being 'superheros in disguise'. We shared what made us special and different. This included being brave by having an NG tube or having freckles. We loved sharing our ideas during circle time and know it is important to be different, otherwise the world would be very boring!
