Decimals as one tenth of a number

By Kim Ferguson, in Year 3 - Thursday, 13 June 2024

In our maths lessons, year 3 have been looking at decimals as one tenth of a number. We worked in pairs with cuisenaire rods to find the whole part which was made of 10 tenths. We all had different sized rods from each other. After comparing two of the rods we cailrified that both are tenths but that the red tenth was smaller than the green tenth. We found out that the larger the tenth, the larger the whole.

Year 3 Girls Football Festival

By Kim Ferguson, in Year 3 - Sunday, 2 June 2024

On the last day of half term Miss Ferguson accompanied a selection of year 3 girls to a football festival organised by Stevenage FC. Six schools took part in a round robin festival which gave the girls the opportunity to have fun and play football. Each school played each other in games lasting 12 minutes long meaning each school played an hours worth of football.

All girls who participated received a medal and during the football games certificates were handed out to the girls which demonstrated one of SFC's four values. These values are:

Be Connected – For great teamwork and working well with others.

Be Inspiring – For setting a great example to others.

Be Fair – For being considerate and thinking of others.

Be Ambitious – For working hard and never giving up on your goals.

The girls were amazing, and due to illness, were just a squad of 6 girls who worked tirelessly without substitutes. Well done year 3 girls!

On Friday, some lucky year 3 and 4 children were chosen to attend a World Book Day author event organsied by the Premier League and hosted by Stevenage Football Club. The children met Michaela Morgan who is well known author, who has had many books published. Her most famous books for children are Night Flight, The Walter Tull Scrapbook and Respect. She delivered an informative talk to the children and even signed their own copy of The Walter Tull Scrapbook which had been donated by The Premier League.  The children took part in some World Book Day activites and even went on a Stadium tour! An amazing day was had and it was also a great opportunity for our children to have the experience of meeting a 'real life author.'

How To Be A Lion

By Kim Ferguson, in Year 3 - Friday, 8 March 2024

For World Book Day the children in Hazel class read the book How To Be A Lion by Ed Vere.

The book taught the children the importance of being true to yourself, mindfulness, and standing by your friends. In the book they met Leonard, a lion, and his best friend Marianne, a duck.

Leonard and Marianne have a happy life together--talking, playing, writing poems, and making wishes, But one day, a pack of bullies questions whether it's right for a lion and a duck to be friends. Leonard soon learns there are many ways to be a lion, and many ways to be a friend, and that sometimes finding just the right words can change the world.

During the day the children created fact files about lions, made a zig-zag books to retell the story in their own words and even followed a tutorial on how to draw Leonard.

The Smeds and The Smoos

By Hornbeam Class, in Year 3 - Thursday, 7 March 2024

Hornbeam class have had a brilliant day celebrating World Book Day 2024 today.

We began the day by learning all about two families; The Smeds and The Smoos. The main characters are aliens. The Smeds are red and The Smoos are blue. Miss Brown was dressed as a Smed and Mrs Johnson was dressed as a Smoo.

After being read the story and watching it digitally, we wrote book reviews highlighting our favourite parts- safe to say it recieved 5 star reviews.

The story ends with the families setting aside their differences and realising that no matter what your differences are, you can get along! The red Smed Janet and the blue Smoo Bill had a purple alien called a Smoo-Smed.

This lead to a colour mixing activity where we made our own spinners using two colours to make a secondary colour when spun.

We created some awesome aliens and planets for them to live on. Before ending our day by making colouring mixing sensory bottles. We used half a jar of water, added a few drops of food colouring, mixed baby oil and a different food colouring in a seperate cup and poured the oil mixture into the water in the jar. We loved watching the colours mix as well as watching the jars settle to show the two seperate colours again!

Our song to sing by the light of the silvery squoon,

And you can sing, too, if you make up a tune:

"Play with the Smeds and play with the Smoos.

Play with whichever friends you choose.

Then close your eyse and while you snooze,

Dream of the Smeds and dream of the Smoos!"

Our visit to the museum

By Hornbeam , in Year 3 - Friday, 2 February 2024

Hornbeam class spent a fun and informative hour at the museum this week. We were shown some pictures of the plans for Stevenage becoming the first new town and a historian told us lots of facts and allowed us to ask questions.

We then spent some time exploring the galleries, we loved how interactive they were.

Finally, we were lucky enough to see some fossils, sketch these and attempt to identify them in their directory.

We are looking forward to learning more about the wonderful place we live.

Fit Kidz

By Hornbeam, in Year 3 - Monday, 15 January 2024

Year 3 are lucky enough to have their PE lessons taught by the amazing Chris from Fit Kidz for the next four weeks.

When we arrived at the lower hall a fourteen part fitness circuit was set up. Chris explained each of the stations and then we spent one minute working at each one. We tried different kinds of weight lifting- in balls, bags and bells. We practised balancing on trampolines and balls. We had a great time and can't wait to do it all again next week!

Marvellous Maps

By Kim, in Year 3 - Friday, 12 January 2024

In our topic lesson we have been looking at The United Kingdom, we found England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Then we had to locate the capital cities within these countries then find other major cities. It was a little bit tricky but we enjoyed using the atlases and learning how to use them.
