Stevenage The First New Town

By Kim Ferguson, in Year 3 - Saturday, 1 April 2023

Even though it was the last day of the spring term, Hazel class were the final year 3 class to visit Stevenage museum to find out about Stevenage The First New Town. As well as listening to a very informative talk delivered by the museum staff the children explored the artefacts inside the museum and found out all about their history topic. They also had the opportunity to sketch a variety of fossils which linked nicely to their current science topic of Rocks and Soils.

The Pebble In My Pocket

By Kim Ferguson, in Year 3 - Monday, 27 March 2023

Where do pebbles come from? How are they made? These are just 2 of the questions that year 3 are trying to find out this term as we investigate rocks and soil. In our guided reading lessons we have been reading the book Pebble in My Pocket by Meredith Hooper & Chris Coady. We are tracking the story of a pebble from its origin in a fiery volcano 480 million years ago to its place in a modern landscape today. To help the children understand its journey they have personalised their own pebbles.

Sieving Through Soil

By Kim Ferguson, in Year 3 - Monday, 27 March 2023

In our science lessons we have been investigating different layers of soil. We found out that some soils absorb more water that others and this makes them better for growing different plants. When we looked through the soil samples we found living creatures including worms, centipedes and a beetle. We found stones, roots, seedlings and even a piece of old bathroom tile!

Our museum visit

By Hornbeam, in Year 3 - Friday, 24 March 2023

Today, with the sun shining, Hornbeam class visited Stevenage Musuem and discovered when and how Stevenage new town was formed.

We looked through all of the museum galleriesto learn more about the town.

We identified items that we recognised in the model homes, read the explanation texts to learn more about them and interacted with resources to experience what it may have been like to live in Stevenage between 1946 and 2000.

Then and Now!

By Year 3 , in Year 3 - Friday, 24 March 2023

Today year 3 had a visitor, he was born in 1944 and knew all about life after World War 2. He described his early life and we were able to make lots of comparisons between then and now!

For example, in our classroom we have lots of lovely resources and get to share our ideas. When Richard was at school he was taught by nuns who were very strict and there were punishments for those who misbehaved. He also told us all about his adventures playing outside with his friends because they didn't have lots of toys they had to make their own fun and use their imagination!

We were most surprised to hear that he only ate sweets on special occasions such as his birthday or at Christmas because you couldn't get sweets at the market and they were very expensive!
