Christmas Tree Celebration!

By Robert Staples, Headteacher - Sunday, 8 December 2013

We are really pleased to announce that, after years of trying to make the top three, our futuristic, arty entry to the Holy Trinity Christmas Tree Festival came....SECOND! We are thrilled!

We were pipped at the post by a very moving and topical entry by the British Legion, with a tree inspired by structures from World War I trenches.

There were 43 trees in all and some amazingly creative entries. The top three were:

First Place: British Legion

Second Place: Fairlands

Third Place: St Vincent De Paul

Thanks for your votes... Stevenage obviously loves a bit of modern art with a Christmas twist!

Please vote for our Virtual Christmas Tree!

The school have entered the Stevenage Christmas Tree Festival! The children in the Foundation Stage discussed what Christmas in the future would be like... Then, they turned their ideas into a piece of concept art!

WE NEED YOUR VOTE!

There is a charge of £2 for adults to look at the trees entered into the festival at Holy Trinity (the church at the bottom of the road.) Children can go in for free. It looks lovely inside and would be a really good trip out to get into the Christmas spirit!

The competition closes at 4pm on Saturday 7th December... so please get down there and VOTE FOR FAIRLANDS!

Reaching High... in Attendance!

By Robert Staples, Headteacher - Tuesday, 12 November 2013

Following a review of our attendance monitoring systems, we have produced a new guide to attendance for parents and carers to make it clear what we expect in relation to attendance. Please read this carefully - it has a simple message: the better your child's attendance, the better they will achieve!

Imagine watching a film, where 10 minutes out of every hour was blanked out... you would soon lose interest, 'lose the plot', give up and switch off!

This is what it is like for a child when they miss school - they very quickly 'lose the plot' of their learning journey and switch off.

Let's aim for 100% attendance and keep our children switched on to learning!

You can see the guide HERE.

Super scientists!

By Robert Staples, Headteacher - Friday, 13 September 2013

Fairlands has been successful in obtaining a Silver Award for the Primary Science Quality Mark, which celebrates a commitment to excellence in science teaching and learning.

Jane Turner, National Director of the PSQM programme , said: “Gaining a Primary Science Quality Award is a significant achievement for a school.  The standard of the submissions has been extremely high and their content is quite breath-taking. Science subject leaders, their colleagues, head teachers, children, parents and governors should be very proud.”

Thank you to Mr Dickinson, our science subject leader, who led on this initiative!
