What a busy half term!

By Beech Class, in Reception - Wednesday, 12 February 2025

This term the children have been working incredibly hard! We have been learning about People Who Help Us. The children have really enjoyed this topic and have met lots of amazing people. We met the school cooks, a real life lollipop lady, a librarian and we got to explore our school and meet some of the staff who help us every day.

We also visited the Little City, we pretended to be different people who help us and got to pretend we had real jobs. The children loved this experience! We were even inspired by the cooks to make our own fruit kebabs. The children were great at trying new fruits and even learnt how to safely chop and prepare food.

In Maths, the children have been learning how to make patterns, we really enjoyed this learning and made lots patterns in different ways. We have also been learning about longer, shorter, taller, heavier and lighter.

We have also started to write sentences, this has been a little bit tricky but the class are very determined. We know we need to use finger spaces, a capital letter at the start and always remember a full stop!

Beech Class, you have worked incredibly hard this term and we are beyond proud of all of you. Well done, Beech Class!

Library Visit

By Ash Class, in Reception - Tuesday, 11 February 2025

We went to the library!

We walked out of school and through the town to the library. We looked at some pictures of what we would find along out way. We spotted Aldi, the silver sphere, Noodle stop, primark and a cafe.

When we got there we had to be really quiet! We sat down and listened to a story from the librarian. It was a story about a disgusting sandwich.  We then learnt all about the library. The librarian told us you can join the library for FREE, you can borrow up to 30 books at a time and you can even get your own library card with your name on it.

We then had some time exploring the library and all the amazing books they have.

We then had a long walk back, but luckily, the rain stopped until we got back !

Fruit Kebabs

By Ash Class, in Reception - Wednesday, 29 January 2025

This week we visited our school cooks!

We learnt that there are seven cooks.

They cook over 600 meals a day.

They have four ovens.

& our favourite... on a Friday, they cook 500 sausages!

We discussed foods that were healthy and unhealthy and even made our own fruit kebabs. Some of us tried new fruits, they were delicious!

Lollipop Lady Visit

Lollipop Lady visit

By Reception , in Reception - Monday, 20 January 2025

Last week we had a very visitor. We had our local lollipop lady come and visit us in school.

Our topic this half-term is people who help us, so Mrs Poole-Tabener told us how she helps people cross the road before and after school.

She wore her special yellow uniform and told us that she wears her uniform to keep her safe and so that cars can see her if it is dark. She told us how to keep safe when crossing roads and we practised crossing the road safely!

If you see Mrs Poole-Tabener on Sish Lane, at the crossing, don't forget to say hello!

All About Me

By Beech Class, in Reception - Friday, 8 November 2024

This term we have really enjoyed our topic, All About Me. We have learnt about our senses, how to make a skeleton, who's in our families and different celebrations. We have really enjoyed this topic and we are excited to continue it for a few more weeks. We are going to create different self portraits next week and then we will use our baby photos to learn about the past and how we have changed.

In phonics this week we have learnt 3 diagraphs, ss, ff, ll, and the new phoneme j. We have also started reading practise and we are super excited  to take our first books home this weekend. We have been working hard practising our blending skills.

In independent time this week, Ted, Finley and Hugo made a huge aeroplane in the construction area. It even had 3 seats and two wings. Meanwhile, Oscar, Isla and Musa had some calm time in the wheelbarrow!

Well done Beech Class! Another fantastic week. Have a wonderful weekend :)

Black History Month

By Mrs Moore, in Reception - Thursday, 24 October 2024

During October, Fairlands School have been celebrating Black History Month.

Following the amazing summer of sport at the Paris Olympics, we decided to learn about black athletes from this year's Olympics and past sporting events.

We learnt about Simon Byles, Wilma Rudolph, Mo Farah, Eva Okaro and many more.

We really enjoyed learning about the different athletes and their amazing achievements. We also learnt the importance of diversity in sport and people of colour seeing themselves being represented.

Year 2 learnt more about their favourite athlete- Wilma Rudolph. They made some wonderful posters full of great facts. Well done, year 2.

On Tuesday 15th October, we took part in the 'Great big Live Assembly 2024'. Lots of children from around the country joined the live streamed assembly. We listened to special speakers talk about who inspires them. We even listened to an interview from Black Panthers Letitia Wright. Lots of children enjoyed this assembly and it was a great opportunity to come together and celebrate black history.

If you are looking for a way to celebrate Black History Month at home- this weekend (Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th October). there is a live event at The Galleria in Hatfield. There will be live music, stalls, workshops and fashion. Disney+ also have a 'Black Stories' section filled with films and episodes that celebrate different cultures. Maybe you could visit Stevenage library and check out their collection of diverse stories.

Well done Fairlands. Have a lovely half term break!
